Understanding tie-down sizes

Tie-down length
The length of a strap is how long it is from the buckle to the end when it's stretched out.

Tie-down width
The width of the strap is simply how wide it is. As far as width goes, we have three different sizes: 1 inch, 1.5 inches, and 2 inches wide.
Types of Tie-down Strap
Lashing Straps
Lashing Straps feature an easy-to-use gator clip, and are generally the lightest-duty tie-down strap with a maximum of 100-lb working load and 220-lb break strength. They are designed for use on cargo carriers, game carts, and other small loads.
Cam Buckle Straps
Cam Buckle Straps are generally lighter-duty than ratchet straps but heavier-duty than lashing straps. They are designed for use with medium-sized loads such as dirt bikes and ATVs, and can have up to a 500-lb working load and 1,500-lb breaking strength. They are easy and quicker to tighten and release than a ratchet strap, but cannot safely secure as much weight.
Ratchet Straps
Ratchet Straps are named for their method of locking and securing the strap via an easy-to-use ratcheting system. Ratchet straps can have a working load limit up to 5,000 lbs. with a 15,000-lb break strength rating, and can create a tighter and more secure restraint – ideal for solid, heavy loads.
Tips for using lashing straps safely
Only use approved lashing straps
Make sure the lashing straps you use are approved and have a readable label. Without a label you should NOT use the straps.
Inspect lashing straps regularly
Check lashing straps for wear, damage and deformation. If there are any signs of wear or damage, the straps should be replaced immediately!
Keep the lashing straps away from chemicals, UV radiation and fire: Lashing straps can be damaged by exposure to chemicals, UV radiation and fire. Store the lashing straps in a dry, cool place and keep them away from these substances.
Use the right straps for the load: Choose straps with an STF rating suitable for the load you are transporting. Make sure the width, thickness and material of the lashing strap are suitable for the load.
Secure the load
Make sure the load is securely secured before driving. Use the correct technique to secure the lashing straps and check that the load cannot shift.
Check the tension on the lashing straps when you are on the road: Any vibrations or bumps can cause straps to lose tension.
Use at least 2 lashing straps across the load: always be sure the load is properly secured.
